8th Grade Band
The 8th Grade Band is an ensemble that develops skills learned in 7th grade in order to perform at a higher technical and musical level. Focus is placed on the intonation, balance, and blend of the ensemble. Students will work primarily with band repertoire and technical exercises provided in the music folder along with continuing exercises in Traditions of Excellence Book 2. They will perform at least 4 concerts throughout the year including OMEA District IV Large Group Contest. It is expected that students practice at least 100 minutes a week outside of the school day to learn concert music and assignments. Students also have access to SmartMusic to use as a practice tool and to submit performance assessments. Private lessons are encouraged for all students, but especially for switch-over instruments and percussionists.
The 8th grade band will learn about marching band which concludes with a rehearsal and football game with the high school marching mustangs. For this unit, all students will need an appropriate lyre and flip folder available at local music stores.
8th grade band pre-requisite
Students must have participated in 7th grade band last year, or pass an audition playing grade level appropriate music.
