6th Grade Band
The 6th Grade Band is an ensemble that develops basic musicianship through note & rhythm reading, theory basics, tone production, and proper rehearsal etiquette. Students will work primarily out of the Traditions of Excellence Book 1 (the same as 5th grade) that can be purchased at a local music store, and will perform full band pieces on at least 3 concerts throughout the year. It is expected that students practice at least 100 minutes a week outside of the school day to learn concert music and assignments from the book. Students also have access to SmartMusic to use as a practice tool and to submit performance assessments. Students have the opportunity to switch to a school-owned "color" instrument such as oboe, bassoon, french horn, baritone, and tuba. Private lessons are encouraged for all students, but especially for switch-over instruments and percussionists.
6th grade band pre-requisite
There is no pre-requisite for 6th grade band other than the interest in learning a band instrument. Students who were in 5th grade band will build upon their progress from the previous year. Beginners must buy or rent an instrument after consulting with the director and have all materials within the first 2 weeks of school or will be reassigned to a different class.
